HBCU NEXTG LLC, was founded by Dr. Samuel Hinton affectionately known as “Dr. Sam” in January 2015 and rebranded in 2019. HBCU NEXTG is committed to spreading the importance of education through our diligent work as it relates to scholarship, leadership and service. While we aim to present current research on the particular issues, we are keen to focus on best practices/emerging ways of working the aim to strengthen and build the practice and delivery of services and programs of Black Scholars in higher education.
Dr. Samuel L. Hinton received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from South Carolina
State University, Orangeburg, SC; Master of Science in Post Secondary Education with a
concentration in Higher Education Administration from Troy University, Troy, Alabama and
a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education
Administration from Argosy University in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, Dr. Hinton has
earned a graduate certificate in Enrollment Management and Institutional Marketing from
the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Walden University.
Dr. Hinton is the co-founder of the Crawford-Hinton History scholarship along with Dr. Fashaad Crawford for History majors in the Department of Political Science and History established on May 21, 2001 in the Division of Institutional Advancement at South Carolina State University where he served in the capacity of Development Associate in the office of Development and Research.
Dr. Hinton is the 2006 Minority Scholarship recipient from the Southern Association of Collegiate and Admission Officers to attend the annual conference for Registrars and Admissions officers in Lexington, Kentucky where he served in the capacity of Sr. Admissions Counselor and Recruiter at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina. Dr. Hinton has served as a former member of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at Benedict College (2008-2009) in Columbia, South Carolina, which is a course of action, designed to address a specific issue critical to student learning which supports reaffirmation related to SACS (Southern Accreditation of Colleges and Schools) where he served in the capacity of Retention Specialist and Seminar Instructor. Dr. Hinton is a contributing author for the book “Setting a New Agenda for Student Engagement and Retention in Historically Black Colleges and Universities” edited by Dr. Charles B.W. Prince, University of East London in London, UK and Dr. Rochelle Ford, Elon University, Elon, North Carolina published summer 2016. Dr. Hinton is also a published research writer with ProQuest Dissertations and Thesis. Dr. Hinton dissertation title is "Factors That Affect Retention among Freshman Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities." Dr. Hinton is also an contributing author to the book "Critical Assessment and Strategies for Increased Student Retention" edited by Dr Ruth Black, California State University, Los Angeles, California published fall 2017. Dr. Hinton formerly served as a Board member for the former Garden City Preparatory Academy for Boys (2014-2016) in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Dr. Hinton currently serves as a member of the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education and the Black Doctoral Network where he serves as a conference abstract reviewer. Dr Hinton is a 2017 Epsilon cohort fellow recipient in the Higher Education Leadership Foundation Institute. Dr Hinton along with Dr. Antwon D. Woods are editors and authors of their recently published book (December, 2018) “Examining Student Retention and Engagement Strategies at Historically Black Colleges and Universities”. Dr. Hinton established the I Chose South Carolina State University scholarship for current students on September 19, 2018. Dr. Hinton is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and the South Carolina State University Alumni Association as a Life Member and former public policy committee chair (2013-2018).
Dr. Hinton a staunch advocate of HBCUs, with a passion for first-generation students, student success and retention, has over a decade of experiences in Higher Education and has served in various leadership capacities throughout his career. Dr. Hinton is highly motivated and result oriented professional with exceptional leadership and communication skills; Strong background in the development and delivery of high-impact presentations utilizing verbal acuity and technical proficiencies; experienced in leading and motivating both students and associates; dedicated to the advancement of students through the development and implementation of organized, engaging, and innovative programs with meaningful involvement. Dr. Hinton is skilled in recognizing individual student needs through assessing overall goals while enhancing success for the advancement of Higher Education.

Developing the next generation of HBCU leaders and advocates is not merely necessary-its absolutely essential. HBCU NEXTG is preparing thought leaders in the HBCU ecosystem. As such, HBCU NEXTG is essential to the sustainability of our unique and precious institutions.
HBCU NEXTG serves as an incubator for Black Scholars and a safe space to develop one’s own cultural identity with a focus on minority scholarship, educational and leadership while developing best practices and exchanged collaborations to Black Scholars in higher education. HBCU NEXTG provides an opportunity to challenge the pivotal role of HBCUs in research while illuminating the critical considerations these institutions are facing for their future survival.
The HBCU NEXTG provides a wonderful opportunity for future leaders to learn from experienced leaders in the higher education landscape. Providing an opportunity for sharing of experiences and ideas in order to move an institution forward is a great way to dissect what works and what doesn’t. Having an opportunity to impact the development of future leaders in a small, intimate, conversational setting ensures real give and take among present and future leaders.
The work of HBCU NEXTG mobilizes black higher educational leaders through scholarship, leadership and service. Using current research, best practices and emerging ones, HBCU NEXTG work will play a part in shaping the future of higher education. HBCU NEXTG work will allow black scholars to become prepared to shape effective public policy and foster innovative, high-quality practice in their respective institutions or organizations.
HBCU NEXTG is doing work that is critical to the academic success of current and future students. HBCU NEXTG is supporting the work of campuses and administrators across the country. I am honored to be in partnership with such a great organization and look forward to the impact that it will have in the years to come.
HBCU NEXTG is an awesome organization that promotes the ongoing scholarship, practice and research of Black and minority scholars. Dr. Hinton has provided a safe space for young academics and those who work in other higher education positions to share their experiences and expectations as we aim to mobilize our beloved HBCUs into an effective future.
Dr. Hinton is creating long overdue spaces for educators, administrators, and advocates for Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationwide. As a product of an HBCU, Dr. Hinton is truly an example of Sankfoka - going back to gain wisdom to bring forth to a new generation of our people. I attended Dr. Hinton inaugural Coffee and Conversations on February 21, 2020. This symposium was timely and a needed discussion for us in the world of HBCUs. I look forward to further events and collaborations with Dr. Hinton and the HBCU NEXTG team.
Dr. Samuel Hinton is one of our most effective and impactful scholars! Using his organization, HBCU NEXTG, he has given scholars and Higher Education practitioners and administrators, including mid-level and senior leaders, a wealth of scholarship, and a platform to share research, as well as retention, persistence, and completion initiatives and institutional effectiveness strategies, ideas, and programs.

Connector. Collaborator. Leader. Three words that come to mind when I think of Dr. Samuel Hinton. Not only does he do "the work," but he does #goodwork for the benefit of all students and black scholars in higher education!
I am so proud of the critical work of Samuel and look forward to what the future holds for HBCU NEXTG LLC. His passion for the importance of education, especially HBCUs, is very vital towards the next generation of practitioners and the guidance that they need for the role in leadership.
